Created by the painter in his hometown of Cateau-Cambresis, the departmental museum has been completely renovated. The expanded, modernized buildings make the Palais Fénelon an emblematic cultural center of the North and accessible to all. From the first works painted in Bohain to the Vence Chapel, the visit through the works of Matisse is akin to a journey encompassing colour, sumptuous materials, the beauty of models, a passion for drawings and a love of poetry. The Herbin Collection is a splendid opportunity to discover a chapter in the history of modern art: geometric abstraction. The Museum’s collections have been enhanced thanks to the Donation of Alice Tériade. The general public can now enjoy works by Picasso, Rouault, Giacometti, Léger, Miro, and Chagall including the famous “Dining Room” decorated by Matisse.
